Business has been
great and, once again, New York City Hotels are generally the most
expensive in the country. On top of the high hotel rates are city and
state sales taxes plus an occupancy tax (which come to 13.625 percent,
plus and additional fee of $3.50 a night. We have compiled a list of somewhat less expensive hotels (about $200-230/night) in mid-Manhattan that have lower rates.
These are not dumps but most tend to be rather Spartan. If you're on a
strict budget, one night or two can't be all that bad and the fun you can
have in New York should make it all worth while. Many of these hotels
frequently lower their rates for weekends. During this holiday season,
however, the rates will be at their highest. This will be automatically reflected based on
the dates you enter for your stay.
This column
indicates the typical price per night. Please note that
New York room
rates fluctuate due to seasonal popularity, special events in the area, etc.

Hotels near
Times Square offering 'fitness' or exercise facilities are
indicated with an F in this column. If the hotel also has a spa, it is
so indicated by an S in this column. Most hotels define a 'spa' as a
large hot tub with built in water jets. In a few cases, fitness
facilities and spas may be off-premises (entry by pass issued by the
hotel) in which case dressing rooms are also present for your
convenience.

Times Square offering a full kitchen or 'kitchenette' are indicated with an
'K' in this column. An 'M' in this column indicates microwave available. If the
room also has a refrigerator, it is so indicated by an 'R' in this column.
Many hotels have some rooms furnished with microwaves and small
refrigerators but you have to request them. We list them only if there
is not an additional charge (or so they have informed us).
Hotels near
Times Square offering Internet access are indicated (with an M for
dial-up and W for
wideband) in the I'net column. Please note that 'wideband' facilities
vary. In addition to a network port (usually installed in the docking
station), we suggest you bring along cables and your Windows
distribution CD (in case you are required to load a special network
driver). For 'dial up dataports', you would only need a modem and an
RJ-11 patch cord (which you should always have with you, anyway).
